Our Community and History

Founded in 1799, Elizabethton, Tenn., is a city rich with history and southern charm nestled within the Appalachian Mountains. Elizabethton (pronounced e-liz-a-BETH-ton by locals) boasts a population of 14,200 living within the nine miles it occupies of Carter County.

The area offers many attractions for nature lovers, history buffs, antiques shoppers and outdoor sportsmen. Wilbur Lake, Watauga River and Doe River provide opportunities to fish, swim, ski, canoe, raft, kayak, boat or just enjoy the water. Fishermen are attracted to the year-round supply of trophy trout in the Watauga River. The Appalachian Trail is a short distance away, offering a place for day hikes filled with breathtaking views and waterfalls. Golfers can enjoy the 18-hole green at Elizabethton Golf Course. The “Tweetsie Trail,” a six-mile walking/biking path from Elizabethton to the train depot in Johnson City, follows the abandoned ET&WNC railway used by the area’s beloved “Tweetsie” train and was completed in 2014.

Elizabethton’s historic downtown district contains properties dating from the late 1700s to the early 20th century, and sites  such as the historic Doe River Covered Bridge, the Veterans’ Monument dedicated to both Union and Confederate soldiers from Carter County,  and the John and Landon Carter Mansion - the oldest frame house in Tennessee. Specialty and antiques shops line Main Street and unique dining experiences can be found at The Coffee Company and the Bonnie Kate Café.
Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park, within walking distance of Sycamore Shoals Hospital, is home to the state’s official historic outdoor drama, “Liberty!” as well as craft classes, quilt shows, military re-enactments, living history programs and more. The State Line Drive-In is one of the region’s few remaining old-time drive-in theaters in operation. Family festivals, parades, art shows and antique car cruise-ins are long-time traditions enjoyed by locals and tourists.

In spite of its size, Elizabethton has its own airport and hosts a branch of Northeast State Community College. It borders the larger city of Johnson City with easy access to major interstates and Tri-Cities Regional Airport, making Elizabethton a prime location for those who want a small town experience while staying closely connected to larger cities and major transportation routes.

History

The roots of Sycamore Shoals Hospital can be traced back to Carter County Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1959. Over the years the hospital was managed both locally and professionally through various relationships.

In the mid-1980s that local control was given to Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) in exchange for their commitment to build a new hospital in the community. That facility is Sycamore Shoals Hospital, which opened on Dec. 6, 1986.  From that date until the purchase by Johnson City Medical Center in 1998, Sycamore Shoals operated as a for-profit hospital.

With the formation of Mountain States Health in 1998, Sycamore Shoals Hospital became a community not for profit hospital.
