Shepherd named new chief nursing officer at Smyth County Community Hospital

MARION, Va. – Linda Shepherd has been hired as chief nursing officer (CNO) at Smyth County Community Hospital. She brings to the job more than 30 years of experience in nursing leadership.

Shepherd comes to Smyth County from HCA Healthcare’s corporate headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, where she served as CNO research project lead for the company, directly reporting to the corporate CNO/vice president of HCA. As lead investigator, she coordinated and provided recommendations on multiple research projects including nursing retention.

Prior to that, Shepherd served as CNO at HCA LewisGale Hospital in Pulaski, Virginia, for 4½ years. She also held the roles of quality coordinator/assistant quality director and critical care director during her time at LewisGale Hospital Pulaski. Other previous jobs include director of the clinical decision unit at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg, and director of surgical services at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Radford.

“Linda is a fantastic addition to our team,” said James Tyler, vice president/chief executive officer at Smyth County Community Hospital. “She has experience in a wide variety of areas and is already familiar with our region through her previous roles. We’re very glad to have her at Smyth County Community Hospital and we welcome her back to Southwest Virginia.”

Shepherd received her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Lynchburg College in 1985 and her Master of Business Administration with a focus on leadership from Liberty University, Lynchburg, in 2013. She is a member of the board of trustees of the Virginia Nurses Association, where she also serves as treasurer, and she is a member of the Virginia Nurses Foundation.

Life-saving sepsis initiative by Mountain States, Johnston Memorial Hospital team wins national award
