Stroke Care

A stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 or your local emergency number to get to the hospital quickly at the first signs of a stroke — even if the symptoms go away. Take note of when the symptoms began or when the patient was last known to be well. It is helpful to always carry an updated list of medications, health problems and past surgeries.

Every year many patients and families are impacted by the diagnosis of stroke. Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality in the United States. Controlling risk factors, early identification, and quick intervention can improve outcomes and quality of life. Our “Life Saved” videos feature grateful stroke survivors and their stories about their experience and the treatment they received at the Certified Stroke Center at JCMC.

Treatment

If a stroke is caused by a blood clot, a drug called TPA may be given to dissolve the clot. This medication can reduce long-term disability, but must be given within 3 hours (in special situations may be extended to 4.5 hours) from the start of symptoms to be most effective. Other treatments will depend on the type and cause of the stroke, as well as the amount of injury to the brain. Care may include special procedures, surgery, changing medications, and therapy to help recover as much function as possible.
